How Much Does a Curbless Roll-In Shower Cost in 2026?

Updated October 18, 2026 · By the Aging in Place Grants research desk · How we research

Roll-in showers range from about $2,900 for a prefab base to $15,000 or more for a custom tiled curbless shower.

A curbless, or roll-in, shower has no lip at the entry. A wheelchair, shower chair or walker can roll straight in. It is the gold standard for bathroom access, and it is often the change that lets someone stay home after a stroke or major surgery.

Prices vary more for this project than almost any other on our site. Here is why, and how to budget.

Roll-in shower cost at a glance

The sources we checked disagree, and we are showing that disagreement instead of hiding it.

  • Angi reports a national average of $3,800, with most jobs between $2,900 and $4,600, plus $250 to $1,000 for permits, cleanup and demolition 1.
  • This Old House lists curbless showers at $8,000 to $15,000 when replacing a tub 2.
  • Fixr puts walk-in showers at $5,000 to $11,000 on average, with custom 60 by 60 curbless builds reaching $20,000 or more 3.

The low numbers mostly reflect prefab roll-in bases put into a space already sized for a shower. The high numbers reflect custom tile, a recessed floor and new plumbing.

Why curbless costs more than a standard shower

Water must stay in the shower without a curb to stop it. That means the floor must slope toward the drain, and in many homes the shower area must be lowered so the floor stays level with the rest of the bathroom. Angi says curbless showers often cost $500 to $700 more than standard walk-in showers, and more in a full wet-room design where the whole room is waterproofed 4. Fixr, by contrast, says going curbless "doesn't usually add much" 3. Expect the extra cost to depend on your floor.

Size

Angi prices common roll-in sizes from about $2,600 for a 60 by 30 inch shower to $3,600 for 63 by 39 inches in materials 1. A wheelchair user who needs a helper often benefits from the larger end.

Plumbing and floors

Moving the drain and supply lines adds $200 to $500 in plumber labor at Fixr 3, or $900 to $1,100 just to move a drain at This Old House 2. Concrete slabs and floor joists can make recessing the floor harder.

Safety features

Most roll-in showers also need a fold-down seat, grab bars, a handheld shower on a slide bar and controls the seated user can reach. Fixr lists grab bars at $85 to $300 each and a bench at $100 to $500 3.

Timing

Angi says an average install takes two to four days, but jobs that need demolition or new plumbing can stretch much longer 1. Plan temporary bathing, such as a sponge bath or a second bathroom, during the work.

DIY or hire a pro?

This is a job for a licensed contractor. Angi advises against DIY roll-in showers because of water damage and safety risks 1. Ask for a contractor who has built curbless showers before, and ask how they will slope and waterproof the floor. A Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) or an occupational therapist can help with layout.

Most areas require a permit when plumbing is moved. Angi lists about $250 per permit 1, and Fixr says $100 to $500 3.

Who can help pay

  • VA HISA grant. The VA lists roll-in showers as a covered bathroom change. The lifetime grant is $6,800 for a service-connected disability (or a non-service-connected one if rated 50 percent or more) and $2,000 for others 5. Larger VA housing grants exist for severe service-connected disabilities.
  • Medicaid waivers often cover accessible showers for people who qualify for home care.
  • Area Agency on Aging, Centers for Independent Living and nonprofit repair groups can help find funding or crews.
  • USDA Section 504, city CDBG and state housing finance agency programs fund repairs for income-eligible owners.
  • Tax deduction. Bathroom changes for a disability can count as a medical expense when they do not add home value.

Bottom line

Budget about $3,000 to $5,000 if a prefab roll-in base fits your existing shower space, and $8,000 to $15,000 for a custom curbless shower that replaces a tub. Get an assessment first so the shower fits the person who will use it.

Common questions

Why do roll-in shower prices vary so much?

A prefab roll-in base set into an existing shower space is a modest job. A custom tiled shower with a recessed floor and new drain is a full remodel. Angi reports an average of $3,800, while This Old House lists curbless showers at $8,000 to $15,000.

Is a curbless shower more expensive than a regular walk-in shower?

Usually somewhat. Angi says to expect about $500 to $700 more than a standard walk-in shower. Fixr says going curbless often does not add much.

Does the VA pay for roll-in showers?

The VA HISA grant lists roll-in showers as a covered bathroom change. The lifetime limit is $6,800 for service-connected cases and $2,000 for others.

What size should a roll-in shower be?

Common roll-in sizes run from 60 by 30 inches up to about 63 by 39 inches. A larger shower gives a wheelchair user and helper more room.
