Updated October 18, 2026 · By the Aging in Place Grants research desk · How we research

A simple wall-mounted wood handrail for one staircase usually costs $500 to $1,500 installed; short outdoor rails start around $275.

Stairs are one of the riskiest places in any home. A sturdy handrail, ideally on both sides, is one of the simplest ways to make them safer. It costs far less than a stair lift and helps everyone in the family.

Handrail cost at a glance

  • HomeGuide lists stair railings at $500 to $1,500 installed for a typical 25-foot wood project, and notes that wall-mounted rails fall at the low end of prices 1.

Indoor stair handrails

A wall-mounted handrail is a round or oval rail held by brackets screwed into the wall studs. It is the cheapest kind of rail. HomeGuide says installers charge about $300 to $1,000 for an average 25-foot project, or $60 to $100 per hour 1.

If the open side of your stairs has an old, wobbly railing with balusters, fixing or replacing that costs more. HomeGuide lists balusters at about $1,200 to $1,500 on average 1.

Outdoor handrails

Outdoor rails beside porch steps and walkways have to handle weather and be anchored into concrete, brick or wood. HomeGuide puts outdoor handrails at an average of $700 per 5-foot section, with a range of $275 to $1,150, or about $50 to $230 per linear foot 5.

Outdoor rail length Low-end total High-end total
5 ft (3 to 5 porch steps) $250 – $400 $700 – $1,150
10 ft $500 – $800 $1,400 – $2,300
20 ft $1,000 – $1,600 $2,800 – $4,600

From HomeGuide 5.

HomeGuide lists aluminum and steel at about $40 to $60 per foot, vinyl at $25 to $45, and wrought iron at $50 to $120 5. Concrete anchoring costs more than attaching to wood framing 5.

What makes a handrail safe

HomeGuide lists some common code basics 5:

  • Typical residential rail height of about 36 inches
  • A graspable rail 1.25 to 2 inches across
  • Balusters no more than 4 inches apart

For aging in place, also look for:

  • A rail on both sides of the stairs
  • A rail that runs the full length of the stairs, past the top and bottom steps
  • Brackets that do not catch the hand as it slides
  • A color that contrasts with the wall so it is easy to see

DIY or hire a pro?

HomeGuide lists basic DIY outdoor rail kits at $50 to $150 for a 5-foot section 5. Indoor wall-mounted rails are a fair DIY project if you can find studs and set brackets level. The rail must hold a falling adult, so if you are unsure, hire a handyperson or carpenter. Outdoor rails in concrete are best left to pros.

Permits for outdoor railings run $50 to $300 where required 5.

Who can help pay

  • Area Agencies on Aging and nonprofit repair groups often install handrails as part of free home safety repairs.
  • Medicaid waivers may cover handrails as a home change.
  • USDA Section 504 grants, city CDBG programs and Centers for Independent Living can help eligible owners.
  • VA HISA grants can help veterans with medically needed changes to get into and out of the home.
  • Tax deduction: The IRS lists railings and modified stairways among disability changes that usually do not add home value 6.

Bottom line

Budget about $500 to $1,500 for a solid wall-mounted rail on an indoor staircase, and about $275 to $1,150 for a short outdoor rail. Put rails on both sides wherever you can.
